Wakefield teacher wins every pupil in his class a new bike in big school showdown triumph

A Wakefield teacher has become the talk of the school after winning new bikes for every pupil in his class.

Mr Wootton, a year five teacher at Wakefield Methodist Junior, Infant and Nursery School, came out on top in Heart Yorkshire’s Big School Showdown.

He was one of 44 Yorkshire school teachers nominated by their pupils to take part in a 10-question quick-fire quiz.

Mr Wootton answered all 10 questions correctly in an impressive 23 seconds, knocking Miss Riley from St. Andrew’s Junior school in Brighouse (30 seconds) off the top of the leader board, to win a prize haul of bikes generously provided by Wilco Motosave.

Mr Wootton, who was presented with a trophy by Heart Yorkshire Breakfast Show hosts Dixie and Emma yesterday, said: “What an amazing gift to give the children before the summer holidays. Thank you so much to Heart, Dixie and Emma and Wilco Motosave for making memories that will last forever.”

Headteacher Mrs Clark added: “As a school we spend a lot of time teaching children to cycle and this will really help them to be safe on the roads in the future.”

The competition has been running for the last two years and features on air for 10 weeks, with schools across Yorkshire getting involved.

Heart Yorkshire presenter Dixie said: “Mr Wootton smashed it out the park with a phenomenal 23 second victory – the fastest we’ve ever had in the Big School Showdown history and will incredibly hard to beat next year!”

A spokesman from the competition sponsors Wilco Motosave added: “We are so happy that the bikes have gone to such a lovely local school. Well done to all the schools who entered.”
